Serials Cataloging: Title Changes

Follow the guidelines as established in Serials Cataloging Copy Cataloging Checklist, but also check the following when dealing with a straightforward title change:

050/090:

  • Check call numbers on the new record carefully. In most cases, a new title (coded as 780 00 on ceased title) will maintain the same call number as the dead title if the subject matter remains the same. When in doubt, route the item to the Serials Librarian.
  • 50 on the old record: determine if KSU Libraries used the 050. (Minor variations in cutter numbers are not a problem.) Continue cataloging if the call number matches. If not:
    • Determine the number of bound volumes. If less than 16, pull the old volumes and relabel with the call number from the 050.

    • Use the valid 050 for the new title.

    B. 090 on old record; same no. on new record: check classification shedules. If the class no. is accurate, proceed with cataloging.

    C. 090 on old record; no call no. on new record: check classification shedules. If the class no. is accurate, proceed with cataloging. If the number is not accurate:

    • Determine the number of bound volumes on the old record. If less than 16, relabel all volumes with the correct call number. If more than 16, consult with the Serials Cataloger to determine whether all volumes should be relabeled.

    • Use the valid call number for the new title.

71X:

Verify corporate and conference names. If a name change has occurred, old authority work may need updating; new authority work may need to be created/added.

78X:

Verify titles ( |t and/or |a ) and OCLC numbers ( |w ) against those in the database to insure accuracy. (This is especially important because there are times we will overlay an old record that has been replaced on OCLC.)

Verify that titles changes are reflected in Acquisitions.
