Multi-volume sets with analytic call numbers
This routine covers multi-volume sets that have analytic call numbers,
when the series numbering covers more than one number. Two situations
are covered in this routine: sets with volumes that are numbered consecutively
within the series and those that are not numbered consecutively (etc.
call numbers).
Follow all series verification procedures as outlined in the Series
Verification for Copy Catalogers routine.
Sets with series number that is consecutive
This would occur when all pieces of a multi-volume cover more than
one series number, but they are consecutively numbered. For example,
the title Invited lectures from the World Polymer
Congress, IUPAC MACRO 2000, 38th Macromolecular IUPAC Symposium,
is a two volume set, comprising volumes 174 and 175 of the series
Macromolecular Symposia, which is analyzed
under the call number QD471.M32.
-
The series statement will appear using a 490/830 combination.
-
Enter the series as it appears on the piece in a 490 field, with
the range of series numbers in the subfield v.
The first indicator is a 1 (series traced
differently).
Example
490 1 |a Macromolecular symposia ; |v 174-175
-
Enter the authorized form of the series in 830 fields, one for
EACH volume number of the series that KSU owns,
reflecting each series number in that set.
Example
830 0 |a Macromolecular symposia ; |v 174, etc.
830 0 |a Macromolecular symposia ; |v 175.
-
The call number in the 852 of the MFHD record will include the
series numbering, indicated by a range
of numbers.
Example
852 01 |b main |h QD471 |i .M32 v.174-175
-
The 866 field of the MFHD record will include the volume numbers
of the set owned by K-State Libraries.
Example
866 31 |8 0 |a 1-2
-
Create an item record for each individual piece. The Enum
field of the item record will contain the volume number of the
set for that individual piece.
-
The call number on each piece will be the range of series numbers
reflected in the set. (for example, v.174-175). Then each individual
volume will have the volume number reflecting its individual volume
number within the set.

Sets with series number that is not
consecutive (etc. call numbers)
This would occur when all pieces of a multi-volume cover more than
one series number, but the volume numbers of the set are scattered
throughout a analyzed series. For example, the title Papers
in science and public policy is a multi-volume set in the analyzed
series Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.
Volume 1 of the set is volume 368 of the
series, volume 2 of the set
is volume 387 of the series, etc. These
are cataloged using an etc. call number. The series number of the
first volume in the set is used in the analytic call, followed by
etc.
-
The series statement will appear using a 490/830 combination.
-
Enter the series as it appears on the piece in a 490 field. Enter
each series number in the subfield v,
with each number separated by a comma. The first indicator is
a 1 (series traced differently).
Example
490 1 |a Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences ; |v 368, 387,
403
-
Enter the authorized form of the series in 830 fields, one for
EACH volume number of the series that KSU owns,
reflecting each series number in that set. The first 830 field
should be for the first number in the series, followed by etc.
Example
830 0 |a Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences ; |v v.368, etc.
830 0 |a Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences ; |v v.387.
830 0 |a Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences ; |v v.403.
-
The call number in the 852 of the MFHD will have
the series numbering for the first volume in the set, followed
by etc. (for example, v.368, etc.).
Example
852 01 |b main |h Q11 |i .N5 v.368,etc.
-
The 866 field of the MFHD record will include the volume numbers
of the set owned by K-State Libraries.
Example
866 31 |8 0 |a v.1-3
-
Create an item record for each individual piece. The Enum
field of the item record will contain the volume number of the
set for that individual piece.
-
The call number on each piece will be the series number of the
first volume of the set, followed by etc..
Then each individual volume will have the volume number reflecting
its individual volume number within the set.
