948 Fields



  1. There should be no more than two 948 fields per bibliographic record in Voyager.


  2. The 1st 948 field should contain the type of cataloging copy, initials of cataloger and date cataloged.

The two subfields used in this 948 field are:

Subfield ╪a - type of cataloging copy:catalogers initials (use 3 initials)

Codes used in ╪a:

  • c = CIP
  • d = DLC
  • m = member
  • o = original
  • p = problem copy (lacks LC call no. and/or LC subject headings)
  • e3 = enhanced encoding level 3

If revisions are made to a record, cataloger should record that in the existing 948 field, starting with a 2nd subfield ╪a r:

  • r = revised

Other codes used in the subfield a of this 948 field are:

  • l = latest entry (for serials - rarely used)
  • u = URL checked and deleted from bib record (used briefly 1998-99; delete if found)
  • x = retrospective conversion (OCLC copy)
  • z = retrospective conversion, local record (entered from catalog card data)

  1. The 2nd 948 field should contain information about authority control processing. Only one subfield is used in this 948 field:

Wording and capitalization should be exactly as used in example below. Note: Some programs used to extract information from the 948 field are case sensitive, so the words “send” and “to” must be in all lower case and “MARS” in all upper case.
