The purpose of binding books and magazines is to preserve them for future use. The unit coordinates the preparation, shipment and return of library materials to and from the commercial binder, including periodicals, paperbacks, theses, and items needing repair. All items are processed in accordance with Library Binding Institute Standards incorporated into a state contract, specifying quality of materials used, acceptable techniques to be performed, categories appropriate for different types of books, and costs.

Items spend approximately 3-4 weeks within the binding process (2 weeks at the bindery), and all volumes sent to the bindery are checked out on the Library System before being shipped.

K-State Libraries contracts with Heckman Bindery (HF Group) located in North Manchester, Indiana.

The K-State Libraries contract also allows University Departments to have university owned materials bound by HF Group. The University Department Form must accompany the materials being sent and items must be paid with a state purchase order. This form may also be picked up at the Reception Desk (2nd floor) of Hale Library.

Personal copies of dissertations, thesis and reports written by KSU graduate students as part of their degree may be bound by HF Group. The Student Personal Binding Form must accompany the materials sent with a money order or check. This form also may be picked up at the Reception Desk (2nd floor) of Hale Library.
